Oh no! The check engine light just illuminated, which is never a good sign, right? Depending on the problem, the check engine light could be as simple as a loose gas cap or as intricate as a leak in the EVAP system. If your check engine light comes on, don’t panic, and bring your vehicle to us for an accurate diagnosis to determine the problem. In the meantime, here are some common issues as to why your check engine light might be on.
The Gas Cap
Yes, your gas cap can cause your check engine light to become illuminated. Gasoline vapors are circulated throughout the engine and fuel system in the vehicle, and if there is a leak, the check engine light can come on. That “leak” could be a loose or missing gas cap, which is the most common cause of a check engine light coming on. Swing by our shop and let us test the gas cap for you.
Spark Plugs?
Your engine creates its power by igniting a mixture of fuel and oxygen. If your spark plugs are not working correctly, that mixture is not being ignited and not causing the pistons to move. This can cause misfires, lack of performance, and reduced engine power. Not to mention it can cause the check engine light to illuminate. Bring your vehicle in to get your spark plugs tested and replaced. Do not try to remove the spark plugs yourself since that can lead to one breaking off and getting stuck in the engine. That can be a costly process to remove a broken spark plug.
Mass Airflow Sensor
The mass airflow sensor regulates the amount of air flowing into the engine. If the mass airflow sensor, or MAF, is dirty, it can cause the check engine light to come on or cause issues in other systems in the vehicle. Your MAF is generally not that difficult to reach and replace in most vehicles and is generally not an expensive repair. A dirty MAF can cause lowered fuel economy and reduced performance of the engine.
