What Could Be Causing Engine Stalling in Your Car?

There are few issues more frustrating with your car than intermittent engine stalling. It’s often very difficult to figure out what’s causing the problem on your own and you might even start to think you’re imagining things. Gulf Breeze Automotive wants you to know that there are many different possible issues that can cause engine stalling in your car.

Sensor Issues

Your car’s ECM, or engine control module, relies on information from a variety of different sensors to make sure that the engine has what it needs. Some of those sensors detect knocking in the engine, others monitor airflow and oxygen levels in the fuel mix. If any of those sensors have failed or aren’t working properly, that can contribute to issues with the engine stalling.

Spark Plug Trouble

The next main component of the combustion process is spark. Most car owners don’t think much about their spark plugs, but they can go bad. There can also be problems with the spark plug wiring that contribute to engine stalling issues. If the spark timing is off, that can cause additional problems with engine stalling.

Electrical Issues

Electrical issues elsewhere in the car can be another concern when you’re trying to trace engine stalling problems. These types of problems are notoriously difficult to troubleshoot, especially when they’re contributing to intermittent stalling. Some of the problems that could be causing problems could involve charging issues that cause the engine to stall out but are difficult to correlate to the stalling without help from a professional.

Incorrect or Bad Gas

Your car’s manufacturer recommends that you use a specific octane level of gas, and choosing a lower level can cause problems, including engine stalling. Another problem to watch for is contaminated gas. Fuel that has too much water, too much alcohol, or any other type of contamination could cause big problems in the engine. Stalling might even be the least of those problems. If gas is your problem, you’re most likely to notice stalling issues right after the contaminated gas enters the engine.
