Understanding what filters are in your car and what they do is really helpful for you as a car owner. Here’s what Gulf Breeze Automotive wants you to know about your car’s filters.
Fuel Filter
The fuel filter takes the fuel that the fuel pump moves up out of the tank and filters it to remove as much sediment and debris from the fuel as possible. Your car’s engine does not need anything getting into the combustion chamber besides fuel, air, and spark. The fuel filter works as hard as possible to make sure that nothing extra rides into the engine with the fuel. Roughly every 30,000 miles or so your car’s manufacturer may recommend that the fuel filter gets replaced.
Oil Filter
The oil filter is the one that gets changed most often in your car. Every time you get your car’s oil changed, the oil filter gets swapped out. That’s because your car’s engine oil picks up a lot of gunk as it recirculates through the engine and that gunk has to get filtered back out. That is what helps the engine oil to keep doing its job until your next oil change.
Air Filter
Your car’s air filter is the third main filter that helps ensure that the combustion chamber is clean and ready to fire. As your car draws in air through the air intake, that air funnels through the air filter to remove anything that might have gotten caught up in the intake. That means road debris, bugs, and leaves end up in the air filter instead of in the engine. It’s a good idea to check your air filter every few months just to make sure that it isn’t too dirty.
Cabin Air Filter
This last filter is one that not everyone knows that they have in their car. It’s the cabin air filter, and it helps to make sure that the air that is intended for the passenger cabin is as free of dust, dirt, and debris as possible. If you’re noticing that your car smells musty or you’re having more issues with allergies than usual and you spend a lot of time driving, it might be past time to swap out the cabin air filter.
