Your car is more likely to communicate with you when you understand what and how it shares information with you. One of the systems that gives you a lot of warning signs is your car’s transmission. Gulf Breeze Automotive has this advice for you about what to watch out for in terms of transmission trouble.
The Transmission Is Loud
Your transmission shouldn’t be the noisiest part of your car. If you’re hearing a lot of noise from behind you, where the transmission is located, that’s a sign that there’s something going on with the transmission itself. Even if the noise is intermittent, don’t ignore it, because it’s just one of the ways your transmission is letting you know that there’s something wrong.
There’s a Transmission Fluid Leak
Spotting transmission fluid under your car is another sign that there’s something bad happening with the transmission. Transmission fluid can be one of a few different colors. When it’s brand new, it’s red in color and clear. As it ages, transmission turns brown or black. It’s a really greasy fluid, because it is meant to lubricate the transmission. Be on the lookout for puddles under the back of the car, just in case of leaks.
Gears Are Slipping
When gears slip, you might feel hesitation or random acceleration or deceleration as you drive the car. You may even feel these things in conjunction with noises you’re hearing from the transmission. The problem with gears that are slipping is that even when the problem is intermittent, it doesn’t fully go away. It’s likely to continue to get worse.
You Can’t Shift Gears
Eventually, slipping gears become a situation that is far worse. You may find over time that if you ignore the initial warning signs, suddenly the transmission doesn’t work at all. When that happens, you can very quickly find yourself stranded because the transmission can completely fail at any point. If you do suspect that your transmission has failed, don’t try to force it into gear because that can do a lot more damage to what might be a fairly simple repair.
