What’s Leaking From My Car

As you back out of the driveway, you notice a puddle. Does your car have a leak? Should you be concerned? Here are some tips to help you know what’s dripping from your vehicle and if you should have it checked out.

Brake Fluid

If you ever see a slippery, fishy-smelling puddle under your car, do not drive it. Your vehicle is probably leaking brake fluid, which makes it potentially dangerous to drive. Brake fluid starts out pale yellow but begins to turn brown as it ages. Don’t risk a trip without the ability to brake! Have your car towed to a trusted mechanic as soon as possible.

Power Steering or Transmission Fluids

Both transmission and power steering fluids are bright red but turn brown with use, and they both also tend to have a sweeter smell. Between the two, transmission fluid is thicker and will be found leaking from the center of your car. Low transmission fluid levels will cause gear slippage, and you’ll likely notice your car accelerating more sluggishly. Low power steering fluid will result in strange noises or difficulty turning the steering wheel.

Coolant

Coolants can be any variety of colors, from green to orange to pink, but they are all more watery and sweet-smelling. The engine relies on coolant to keep it from overheating, so be careful not to drive on low levels.

Oil

Engine oil ranges from light amber to dark black, depending on how long it’s been since your last oil change. If your car isn’t leaking too much, you can simply add more oil and keep driving. However, you should immediately have your vehicle inspected if there’s a significant leak.

Condensation

If the puddle is clear, waterlike, and coming from the front passenger side, there’s no need for concern. That liquid is just normal air conditioning condensation.
